the republic, whiskey, greapefruit juice, texas drink, summer drink, basil, craft cocktail, the art of living beautifully, tx whiskey
The Republic was written by my dear friend (and father-to-be!!) Pete Hoffman. You’ll recognize the name from my post on the delicious Fall craft cocktail, Sage Advice, I posted in November.
Never have I met someone so in love with Texas–a New Yorker to boot!–and I absolutely love that Pete created this as a tribute to his adopted home state! When I decided to do a post or two on Summer Cocktails, I knew The Republic would need to be on the June schedule.
A little note from Pete:
So, while I was at Bolsa I was introduced to TX Whiskey from Ft. Worth-based Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. Now while I’ll be the first to admit that TX
Whiskey is actually only blended in Texas (though they do have Texas distilled bourbon currently aging in oak barrels), it got me thinking about developing an
accessible whiskey drink that was a homage to the State of Texas. With a little research and some looking around the bar, here’s what I came up with:
The Republic
2 oz TX Whiskey
2oz Fresh-squeezed Grapefruit Juice (the state fruit of Texas)
2-3 Fresh Basil Leaves (we got ours from Tom Spiceman’s FM 1410)
1 Cube of Raw Sugar
– Place basil leaves in a shaker and muddle them DRY with the sugar cube.
– Add whiskey and grapefruit juice.
– Add ice.
– Stir 10 times.
– Strain into rocks glass with a large ice cube or ball (to minimize melt).
– Garnish with a basil leaf.

Buon Apperativo!

-ciao for now-
